Onion rings may not be the leading player when it comes to a delicious stick-to-your ribs kind of meal, but they can make or break a meal all the same. From the cut of the onion to how its battered and fried, onion rings can be downright terrible, or absolutely perfectly crisp and delicious. Here are five of the best places to nab a basket of onion rings in Chicago.

There are hot dogs and burger options galore at this Lakeview hotspot. But they’re made even more perfect by some wonderful fried sides, like their onion rings that are beer battered and also served with a side of ranch. Onion rings are available as an add-on to anything you grab as your main dish, whether it be a Flubby hot dog, build your own burger, Italian beef or even a salad.

This Portage Park restaurant may be known for its delicious burgers and fries, but their onion rings, or in this case, onion straws, are worth every last fried bite. That’s in part because they’re housemade (as are their burgers and fries). Sometimes the straws come on top of the burger, as they do with the Black Betty. Sometimes they come on the side but with plenty of accompaniments, like the bleu cheese fry with homemade onion straws served with bleu cheese crumbles and and buffalo bleu sauce. Either way, you’re going to eat every last one in this rock and roll inspired bar/restaurant. And have plenty of beer choices to go along with it.

What is the only thing that quite possibly may best their famous ribs at this Lincoln Park restaurant? The onion rings, of course. The perfectly crisp fried rings work as a wonderful accompaniment to the ribs too, or chicken, or shrimp. They’re one of the options for sides when you order either an entree, or sandwich. They can also be ordered individually as a whole fried basket of goodness.

You wouldn’t necessarily think a restaurant known for its Korean fried chicken as a place that has stellar onion rings, but it does. Pair some of the best chicken wings in the city with the other fried, and of course, crispy, goodness, the onion rings. The lightly battered onion rings can be ordered individually as a side and are large and steak-cut. They also come with a side of ranch dressing.

Grange Hall Burger Bar
844 W. Randolph St.
Chicago, IL 60607

This burger bar is all about the farm-to-table experience and sourcing local ingredients, which is what you’ll find topping all sorts of burgers, as well key ingredients in the sides. Alongside that berries and brie burger, or perhaps a sage fried chicken sandwich, nab some of the crispiest and tastiest onion rings. These beer-battered onion rings have just the right amount of batter and are fried just right, resulting in an onion ring that will only melt in your mouth.
