Best Vegetarian Hot Dogs In Chicago

Chicago is a city known for its encased meats. But it's also known for its plethora of veggie toppings, thanks to the Chicago-style hot dog that comes loaded with onions, relish, pickles and more. So why not pair those toppings with a vegetarian dog? While the restaurants/hot dog stands offering a stellar veggie dog are few and far between, these five restaurants do a veggie dog justice, and they're well worth a bite (or five).

Before heading into the Field Museum, grab a well-priced dog from a true hot dog stand on Chicago's museum campus. The vegetarian dog here is true Chicago-style. The vegetarian 'dog' is piled high with traditional style fixings including tomatoes, relish, sport peppers, mustard, onions and last, but certainly not least, celery salt. They also offer a range of other dogs with some chips to accompany the snappiness of their dogs. All of this can be enjoyed with some of the best views of the city.

A Korean restaurant for not just a veggie dog, but a vegan one? Yes, please! One of the best and most ordered items on the menu at this Avondale restaurant is their vegan dog. The hot dogs are packed with flavor, in no small part because they're infused with kim chi, and then piled high with lots of traditional and non-traditional Korean toppings, including tomato, onion, avocado, cucumbers, vegan mayo, mustard and ketchup. Since this is a Korean vegan dog, the addition of ketchup will be forgiven...and enjoyed. This vegan doggie comes with a side of fries.

As a hot dog emporium with a lengthy and delicious menu, this Lakeview knows how to do a veggie dog (made with tofu) just right. But they make it even better by offering not one, but two vegetarian dogs in their 2 Willy Special. Since a dog isn't complete without some fries, you'll get that too, as well as your choice of toppings. All that's yours for $8.95. With two dogs in this meal, it's up to you if you want to share. But one bite into these dogs and chances are you'll want them all for yourself.

Hot G Dog in Andersonville is known as the restaurant took off where Doug Sohn's Hot Doug's left off. The menu is chock full of gourmet dogs with all sorts of crazy hot dog toppings. There's only one vegetarian dog here, but for just $3.50, it's worth of every bite. The vegetarian dog is made with a combo of soy protein and vegetables, and it's grilled, giving it the perfect char, before being loaded onto a classic hot dog bun. Just don't forget to order a side of perfectly crunchy fries to go with it.
