This winter, make some time to catch the retrospective exhibit "David Bowie Is" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Visitors to the exhibit can peruse more than 400 items from the iconic musician, including handwritten lyrics and album artwork. Items in the exhibit stretch back to the musician's childhood, too, allowing fans to see a different side of the music legend and see the creative process behind some of Bowie's works. Consider purchasing your tickets to the exhibit in advance.

The next time you are wondering what to do during your lunch break, consider stopping in to the Chicago Cultural Center and taking a look at the exhibit "All The Names: Patricia Rieger." The acclaimed artist uses both sculptures and paintings in this exhibit to examine what the Chicago Cultural Center calls "the poetics hidden in the mundane and everyday." If you're looking for an art exhibit with an interesting twist, then consider checking out "From Past to Present" at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. The exhibit, which is on display for a short period of time, features the works of children living in Chicago alongside works from children in Ukraine. The works include the use of paint, photographs and more. The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is located in Chicago's Ukrainian Village and is near several public transportation options.

If you want to get into the holiday spirit, then a visit to the renowned Art Institute of Chicago should be on your to-do list this winter. In what has become a beloved tradition, the Thorne Miniature Rooms are once again decorated especially for the holidays. The "Holiday Thorne Rooms" include festive decorations — in miniature, of course — in some of the rooms in the permanent exhibit. Visitors will find Christmas trees, wrapped presents, wreaths and plenty of other decorations throughout the rooms. The Art Institute is also displaying its Neapolitan Crèche this holiday season through January 11, 2015, making this exhibit a must-see event for both Chicagoans and out-of-town visitors.

If you've ever drooled over the jewelry worn on the TV show "Downton Abbey," then "Maker & Muse: Women and Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry" at The Driehaus Museum is for you. The exhibit includes jewelry from the late Victorian era all the way to WWI and will give visitors a glimpse into the styles of those eras. The pieces in the exhibit come from all over the world, too, allowing visitors to see the different artistic influences and designs. Guided tours, self-guided tours and audio tours of the exhibit are available, as are private tours. The Driehaus Museum is located just a quick walk west of the Magnificent Mile; after touring the exhibit, why not head to Chicago's top shopping destination and pick up a few baubles of your own?
