Mother, Young Children Rescued From CHA Apartment Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) - A mother and her two young children were among four people rescued by firefighters after a mattress caught fire and filled a portion of a Chicago Housing Authority complex with smoke Thursday afternoon.

An EMS Plan 1, which sends five ambulances, was called for a fire at 1365 N. Hudson Ave. about 4:30 p.m., Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford said. The building is a mixed-occupancy CHA apartment complex near the site of Cabrini-Green.

The fire started on a mattress in a hallway, then filled nearby apartments with smoke, Langford said. CBS 2's Mike Parker reports with smoke in the building, the mother and her two young children climbed out of a fourth floor window. The fire department used a truck ladder to rescue all three of them.

The mother and her two young children suffered minor smoke inhalation, while another adult also suffered smoke inhalation, Langford said.

The mother and her children were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hosptial, while the other adult was taken to Saint Mary Medical Center. All were listed in stable condition, and are expected to be OK.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but caused smoke and water damage to the top floor of the building, Langford said.

Unconfirmed fire dispatch reports indicated the victims were a mother, her 2-month-old baby and 5-year-old child, as well as a 24-year-old woman.

Crews remained at the scene as of 5 p.m.

CBS 2's Mike Parker and the Sun-Times Media Wire contributed to this report.
