Feds Blast Illinois' Handling Of Stimulus Cash

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- The federal Energy Department's inspector general has released a new audit that is highly critical of the way the state of Illinois handled part of the stimulus money it got to weatherize homes.

The audit finds the energy efficiency work on homes in the Chicago area--paid for by part of Illinois' $242 million share of the stimulus money--was subpar, overpriced and poorly monitored.

But the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic opportunity disagrees with the audit, saying the work that was reviewed by auditors was not completed and that no contractors were overpaid. The agency says it is has made improvements in the way it assigns and oversees work done.
