Trent Green: Martz Wants QBs To Be Aggresive

After nearly every Bears game, Jay Cutler's decisions with the football come under scrutiny. Many feel that he forces the ball too often. However, that aggressive playing style might just be what Mike Martz wants from his quarterback.

"One thing you have to understand is that Mike is an emotional guy, you can see that on the sideline," former NFL quarterback Trent Green said on the Mully and Hanley Show.

"But, when he's talking with his quarterbacks he wants his quarterbacks to be aggressive. He was that way with me. He was that way with Kurt [Warner]. He wants his guys to be aggressive because he doesn't want you to be back there and be timid."

However, Martz doesn't just want his quarterback to throwing the ball all over the field with no regard to the consequences. Martz wants his quarterbacks to be aggressive, but still understand the game situation.

"There's also an understanding of game management [that Martz wants]. Understanding what your defense is doing, Understanding what part of the game it is. Understanding what the score of the game is," Green said. "I mean there are certain times to be more risky than others and I think that's where, as a quarterback, you have to understand that yes Mike wants you to be aggressive, but understanding overall game management [is important]. And there's a time and place for you to be less risky."

Understanding when to force the ball and when cut your losses and try again on the next down, or possession, might be the key to the offense taking the next step.
