Braun Criticizes Chico's Past School Reforms

Carol Moseley Braun says the Chicago Public Schools too often track students into specialized schools, with higher achieving students separated from those who need more support.

"There's nothing wrong with having an arts-specific school or music-specific school. There's nothing wrong with that, on the one hand," said Braun. "But when it comes to the point where you have a lottery, and it becomes a matter of chance and not anything having to do with what the community as a whole wants to see, whether or not a child gets a decent education and a chance to start off on the right foot in life, I think then we've failed frankly."

The former U.S. senator says these troubling trends began under rival candidate Gery Chico and former Schools CEO Paul Vallas, who is a Chico supporter.
