Woman Killed After Car Breaks Down On Tollway

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (STMW) - A Northwest Side woman died about an hour after her car broke down on the Jane Addams Tollway in live traffic and was rear-ended by another vehicle near northwest suburban Elk Grove Village Thursday night.

A day earlier, in Rockford, a driver involved in a car crash apparently was struck afterward by a passing vehicle and later died.

At 9:09 p.m. Thursday, a woman was driving a 1999 Nissan sedan when her vehicle broke down and stopped in the middle lane on the eastbound Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) near Golf Road, according to Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sgt. Robert Story.

At that time, a 2005 Honda sedan then rear-ended her vehicle, pushing it into a guard rail, Story said. She was wearing a seat belt and was extricated, Story said.

Dafni Petroova, 34, of the 4900 block of W. Patterson Ave. in Chicago, was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 10:04 p.m., according to a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokeswoman.

The driver in the Honda was not hurt, Story said.

Alcohol, drugs and speed are not suspected to be factors in the crash, although Illinois State Police continue to investigate, Story said.

Elsewhere, DeKalb County sheriff's police are investigating an incident Wednesday night in which a driver involved in a car crash apparently was struck afterward by a passing vehicle and later died.

Robert L. Winton, 53, of Rochelle, died of injuries at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford after the accidents, according to authorities. Sheriff's deputies said a car driven by Winton collided with a car driven by Jessica M. Ward, 31, of Sycamore, about 6:11 p.m. at Peace and Freed roads.

Witnesses told deputies that Winton parked his damaged car along the side of Peace Road and was walking across the roadway, talking on a cell phone, when he was struck by a passing car driven by Kent R. Blaum of DeKalb.

Deputies said Ward was not injured, but that Blaum was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital for treatment.
