Back in the 1990's Antonio Venegas and Gary Amaya were caretakers at Lake Tandem Lodge, a hunting and fishing resort near Morris, Ill.

Venegas tells the Southtown Star he considered Amaya a friend, but, describes him as a Jekyll and Hyde type character.

He says he frequently saw displays of Amaya's short fuse and, in a couple of instances, was the target himself with Amaya twice pulling a gun on him. Each time, he says he managed to calm Amaya down.

Amaya was killed earlier this month when he tried to rob an Orland Park tanning parlor. Police suspect he was the man who killed one man and wounded two others in a random spree in October dubbed the "honeybee shootings" after the shooter asked one victim about honeybees.
