Dog Loose Near Lake Shore Drive On New Year's

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Rogers Park blogger reports that he helped corral a dog that was found running around near the mouth of Lake Shore Drive on New Year's Day.

Craig Gernhardt reported on his blog, "The Broken Heart of Rogers Park," that he saw the stray male German shepherd running near Hollywood Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, in the Edgewater neighborhood.

Video on the site shows three police squad cars trying to corral the dog as he runs in the middle of the street.

Gernhardt says he personally volunteered to help out, assisting police in getting the dog cornered within five minutes.

"I calmed the scared dog down as it was cornered and growling at us, and was able to get a leash around its neck," Gernhardt wrote. "Once the shepherd was calm enough, I loaded him in the back of one of the squad cars."

The blog generally covers crime and quality of life issues in the Rogers Park neighborhood.
