Police: Shoplifter Doesn't Run, Just Has A Beer

HOMER GLEN, Ill. (STMW) - When she was caught shoplifting by a store employee, a southwest suburban woman did not try to run before police arrived, but instead sat down and had a beer.

Will County Sheriff's officers responded Wednesday to a retail theft at the Speedway at 12007 W. 159th St. in unincorporated Homer Glen, according to a report.

Inside the store they found Lauren E. Swolley, 25, of Rainbow Circle in Orland Park sitting on the floor near the cappuccino machine with an open can of Bud Light next to her.

When deputies asked if she was going to pay for the beer, Swolley said she did not have any money and allegedly became abusive toward officers, the report said. She was arrested and charged with retail theft, disorderly conduct and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

An employee said Swolley entered the store, took the can of beer from the cooler and walked out. The employee called police and went outside to stop Swolley, who re-entered the store with the open beer, sat down and drank it.

She continued to drink until dropping and spilling the beer when officers arrived, the report said.
