Bank Facilitates Financial Services For GLBT Community

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A Chicago based bank is making it easier for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community to get financial services.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Lisa Fielding reports, Northern Trust senior vice president John McGowan says the private program has been in place in Chicago for about a year, but now it's up and running.

McGowan points out that same-sex couples do not have the same legal recognition as heterosexual couples, so family law and estate planning is fine-tuned for the growing community.

"They were looking for a provider who would understand the particular legal and taxation challenges they knew were out there, but they wanted to make sure they were working with somebody that wasn't learning along with them, but who already knew it," McGowan said.

McGowan says the program is one of many put into place over the years at Northern Trust. It also began offering domestic partnership benefits to workers more than 13 years ago.
