Mother Gets 12 Years For Burning Son's Feet

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for severely scalding her infant son and then failing to get him medical treatment.

Damaira Roman, 27, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery of a child on Wednesday, Cook County prosecutors said. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison by Cook County Judge Lawrence Flood.

She immersed her 10-month-old son's feet in scalding hot water at her home on the 4900 block of North Kedzie Avenue on April 5, 2008, according to prosecutors.

Two days later, she called the boy's father to complain that her son would not stop crying and had a blister on his foot, prosecutors said. When the father arrived, he saw severe blisters on the boy's feet and took the baby to the hospital.

An investigation determined the child's burns were caused from direct exposure to scalding water and that the child had not received medical attention for at least 24 hours after suffering the injuries.
