Probe: Workers' Comp Widely Abused In Illinois

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A new investigation has found yet another way that Illinois taxpayers are being cheated.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's David Roe reports, the investigation conducted by the downstate Belleville News-Democrat finds that many, state, city and private workers in Illinois have gotten thousands of tax-free dollars paid through worker's compensation with nothing more than a doctor's note.

The paper reports the workers' comp cases, many involving wrist or elbow issues, are often resolved without surgery, treatment or even a lawyer.

The chairman of the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission says uncontested claims will no longer be approved until they are assigned a case number and logged into the agency's database to allow public review.
