Grenade Found On City's Southern Edge

UPDATED 02/24/11 10:43 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A grenade prompted a Hazardous Materials response Thursday morning at a waste handling facility on the city's southern edge.

A Level 1 hazmat alarm was called around 6 a.m., after workers in the area of 13707 S. Jeffery Ave. found a grenade in a garbage can, authorities said.

A recycling and waste management facility are located at that address.

The Chicago Fire Department and technicians from the Police Bomb & Arson Unit secured the scene and determined the grenade was a partially functional grenade. The Bomb and Arson Unit disposed of the grenade, police said.

The explosive apparently was brought into the facility in a load of waste, police said. It was noticed on one of their waste conveyor belts.

Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said the "practice grenade still had some charge'' in it, but it did not explode.

By around 8 a.m., the Fire Department had secured the scene.
