Man Killed After Car Crashes Into Railroad Embankment

EVANSTON, IL (STMW) -- A 47-year-old man was killed Thursday after the car he was driving failed to navigate a turn and struck a railroad embankment at a high speed in north suburban Evanston.

Police responded at 6:14 a.m. to a motor vehicle accident near Oakton Street and Callan Avenue in Evanston, according to an Evanston police release.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the man was traveling eastbound in a vehicle on Oakton Street when he failed to navigate the northbound turn, according to the release. The man then struck the railroad embankment at a speed estimated to be higher than the posted speed limit.

Richard Stafford, 47, of Evanston, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:20 a.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

Evanston police and the North Regional Major Crime Task Forces are investigating. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
