Thornton Could Be Frontrunner To Close

The competition to be the White Sox closer is one of the biggest topics coming from the team's training camp. And it looks like Matt Thornton might be separating himself from Chris Sale.

Thornton has excelled as a set-up man, but there are some who worry that moving him would make him less effective.

"I originally thought the same," Mark Gonzales, of the Chicago Tribune, said on the Danny Mac Show. "Because of the comfort and you don't want to move guys out of their roles that they succeed most in. But there seems to be a feeling that Matt Thornton wants to close and therefore why not give it to him. Sale has a lot to prove, even though he was successful last year. Teams are going to see him for the second time around. He's going to have to make adjustments. I'm not saying he can't do it, he's a very sharp kid, I just think at this point they'll have Thornton close games and Sale coming in in the 7th and 8th [inning]."
