Man Fatally Struck After Wandering Into Traffic

CHICAGO (STMW) - A 63-year-old man was killed after being hit by a car early Monday in the Far South Side Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

About 1:10 a.m., Fred Kuzmanich was struck by a Chevy Malibu at 3116 W. 111th St., according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

The driver of the Chevy noticed he had hit something and that his windshield was damaged, Kubiak said. The driver turned the car around and saw a person lying on the ground. The driver then went to a fire house on the same block to get help.

Kuzmanich, of the 11100 block of South Whipple Street, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

A witness told police Kuzmanich stumbled into traffic, Kubiak said.

An autopsy Monday found he died of multiple injuries suffered from an automobile striking a pedestrian, and his death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner's office.

The Police Major Accident Unit is investigating.
