Pedway Snack Shop Closed After Health Violation

CHICAGO (STMW) - The city closed a Downtown snack shop Monday that allegedly had a waste water backup in the kitchen.

Mayor Richard Daley's Dumpster Task Force closed the "Now We're A Poppin" snack shop at 151 E. Randolph St. Monday because of a waste water backup, according to a statement from the city's Department of Streets & Sanitation. The snack shop is off the pedway in the Millennium Park Metra station.

Inspectors were responding to a general complaint in the area when they entered the snack shop and found the waste water backup in the mop sink in the kitchen area, the statement said. Snacks like popcorn and nachos are prepared in the kitchen.

Management was unable to correct the problem while the task force was present and were forced to close for the critical violation of having a waste water backup in a food preparation area.

"The proximity of waste water to an area where food is being prepared makes for an unhealthy situation," said Josie Cruiz, Deputy Commissioner of Streets & Sanitation's Bureau of Rodent Control. "This snack shop will not be allowed to reopen until they have corrected their plumbing problem and then pass a strict follow-up inspection."
