Phone Companies Offer Free Calls To Japan

CHICAGO (WBBM) - If you are a Verizon or AT&T customer, you'll be able to call or text people in Japan for free.

"Verizon is making calls to Japan free for most of our wireless and residential customers until April 10th," said Verizon spokesperson Carolyn Schaumburger. "We've got free calling to Japan through April 10th then addition, post paid customers will receive free text and multi media messaging to Japan for the same time period."

Wireless customers can also donate to help disaster relief efforts in the area. "We have a mobile giving program so if customers are looking for a quick and easy way to contribute to the Japan relief efforts. For the American Red Cross, they can text redcross to code 90999." Schaumburger said they've set up similar programs when the Earthquake hit Haiti.

ATT&T has also made TV Japan, which brings 24 hour news from Japan, free through March 17th to all U-verse subscribers. ATT&T wireless calls 60 minutes or shorter from the U.S. to Japan will be free until March 31st.
