Fire Sweeps Through Building In Summit

SUMMIT, Ill. (STMW) -- Emergency crews remain at the scene of a fire in southwest suburban Summit that started early Monday and badly damaged a commercial building.

Crews remained on the scene at Archer Road and 61st Street as of 6 a.m., a police dispatcher said.

Archer Road is closed from 1st Avenue (Illinois Route 171) to 62nd Street and will remain closed at least through part of the morning rush hour, the dispatcher said.

Dispatch reports indicated the "stubborn" fire at a one-story commercial building at 6135 S. Archer Rd. began about 3 a.m. The Imperial Sauna is located at that address.

Crews are conducting "extensive overhaul" operations Monday morning, according to dispatch reports. Three aerial lines were used to fight the blaze and at least part of the roof reportedly caved in.

Police and fire officials were not immediately available for comment Monday morning.
