5-Year-Old Boy, Mom Pulled From Englewood Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 5-year-old boy is in critical condition after being pulled by a firefighter from a burning basement Wednesday afternoon in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

The boy's mother and a Chicago Police officer were also injured in the blaze, which started about 3:10 p.m. in a 1-1/2 story home at 6438 S. Wood St., Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said.

The boy was pulled from a basement window by a firefighter and taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in serious to critical condition, Knight said.

His mother was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in "stable" condition, he said. She was found outside the building when crews arrived.

Paramedics at the scene were also treating a Chicago Police officer for minor smoke inhalation injuries.

No other injuries were reported and the extent of damage to the home was not yet known.
