Chemicals Evacuate Meat Packing Plant In Bridgeview

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (CBS) -- Crews Tuesday morning were cleaning up the scene of an overnight hazardous chemical situation at a meat packing plant in south suburban Bridgeview.

Emergency officials responded to Stampede Meat, Inc., at 7351 S. 78th Ave., about 12:20 a.m. after unknown chemicals mixed and caused people at the facility to feel ill, Bridgeview Police Sgt. Lou Dominguez said.

An unknown number of people were taken to area hospitals but no serious injuries had been reported as of about 1:15 a.m., he said.

The building was fully staffed with a couple hundred people when the incident occurred, and everyone had to be evacuated, Dominguez said.

The company specializes in custom-made beef and pork dishes for the restaurant and hospitality industry and runs the 140,000-square foot Bridgeview processing plant, according to the company's website.

Police closed 78th Avenue between 71st and 75th streets as crews cleaned up the incident, Dominguez said.

An unknown number of people were taken to area hospitals but no serious injuries had been reported as of about 1:15 a.m., he said.
