ELGIN, Ill. (WBBM) -- Area high school girls are getting a chance to be belles of the ball at their upcoming proms without breaking the bank.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Lisa Fielding reports, from long to short, from ruffled to sophisticated, Cinderella's Closet in Elgin will be giving away up to 4,000 dresses to girls in need of a prom dress.

Spokeswoman Deirdre White says for parents, it's easy to break the bank for that special night.

Some, she says, just can't afford it.

"Give this opportunity to the girls, and give this opportunity to the parents, where they can make it happen," White said. "It's really amazing."

Low-income girls, identified by their schools or other community groups, have first dibs Saturday at the YWCA, at 220 E. Chicago St. in Elgin. Afterward, the event is open to everyone.

The dresses were donated from area residents, high schools and shops. Many are new and still have their tags, and the rest have been checked out to make sure they are in good condition.
