Man Shot Dead By Police In West Pullman

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was shot and killed overnight, after he allegedly fired shots at officers in the West Pullman neighborhood.

Around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, Calumet District tactical officers were patrolling in the 12300 block of South Wallace Street – an area infamous for gang and drug activity – when they saw someone walking down the street holding his side above his waistband in a "suspicious manner."

The officers got out of their squad car and tried to talk to the man, but he turned and pointed a gun. Then he fired several shots, police said.

Officers returned fire, and chased the man as he ran off. The chase ended when the suspect turned toward the officers abruptly, and police shot and killed him.

The man -- who is between 25 and 30 years old and remained unidentified Wednesday morning -- was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

No officers were hurt, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Calumet Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
