McCarthy Vows To Establish Gun Offender Registry

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Acting police Supt. Garry McCarthy is promising to establish a gun offender registry in Chicago, something aldermen have wanted for some time.

As WBBM Newsradio 780 Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, during a confirmation hearing Monday before the City Council Public Safety Committee, Ald. Edward Burke (14th), a former police officer himself, complained to McCarthy that the City Council had voted to establish a gun offender registry similar to the sex offender registry more than a year ago. But former police Supt. Jody Weis never got the registry going.

McCarthy promised that he would get the registry underway.

"I'm a big believer in it," McCarthy said. "If we have sex offenders registering, why wouldn't we have gun offenders registering with the Police Department?"

People convicted of serious gun crimes who failed to register with the police would face penalties.

McCarthy is expected to be confirmed as superintendent by the full City Council on Wednesday.
