SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- The Illinois Auditor General says if the state is not careful, your income tax information could wind up in the wrong hands.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Bernie Tafoya reports, Auditor General William Holland tells the Chicago Sun-Times he has found sensitive tax records lying around on desks in state Revenue Department offices.

He adds that the department does not perform background checks on workers who have access to information.

He tells the Sun-Times it is only a matter of time before something bad happens.

Revenue Department spokeswoman Sue Hofer tells the newspaper your tax information is not at risk, given that cameras are in place, and there are ways to find out what records employees are going into.
