They say he also had bruises on his face, back and chest.

The state's attorney says the mother's boyfriend is accused of Adonis' murder. 23-year-old Tinnell Smith of the 42-hundred block of South Calumet is charged with first-degree homicide.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says it's investigating the death.

DCFS says it investigated allegations of abuse against the mother in August of last year, allegations it says were unfounded, then started another investigation against the mother in April.

A DCFS spokesman says an infant in the family has been placed in foster care.
