Woodlawn Fire Leaves 14 Homeless

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A fire in the Woodlawn neighborhood early Thursday left 14 people homeless, among them nine children.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on the second floor of a 50-foot by 75-foot building at 6143 S. Kimbark Ave., Fire Media Affairs spokesman Rich Rosado said.

Crews used two hose lines to extinguish the blaze, Rosado said. No one was hurt, according to police and fire authorities.

The city's Department of Health and Human Services responded to assist five adults and nine children who were displaced, Rosado said. The American Red Cross also responded to the scene to assist those affected, he said.

The cause of the fire was not known Thursday morning.
