Men, Young Girls Thrown Overboard In Boat Accident

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A family is safe after a frightening ordeal aboard a boat on Lake Michigan Thursday night.

A father and his two young daughters, along with another man, had to be rescued by a helicopter, after their speedboat struck a breakwater wall in Lake Michigan and flipped, throwing them all overboard.

The accident happened Thursday night about two miles offshore from Lake Shore Drive and Chicago Avenue, police said.

One of the boaters immediately placed a distress call, summoning first responders to the scene.

Officers from the police Marine Unit in a Chicago Fire Department helicopter pulled the victims out of the lake and took them to Monroe Harbor, where Fire Department crews were waiting to render aid, police said.

They were all wearing lifejackets when rescuers found them, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The two men were treated at the scene while the girls, ages 10 and 12, were taken to Children's Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
