Man Dies After Being Kicked, Beaten In Evanston

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- A man was found dead at his Evanston home over the weekend, after being beaten in a fight at his home the night before.

Police are are questioning a person of interest in the case.

Evanston police were called around 2:20 p.m. Sunday the home of Juan Sanchez, in the 200 blokc of Dodge Avenue in the west central part of Evanston. Friends of Sanchez had found him unresponsive in his basement, a release from police said.

Sanchez was dead on the scene, police said. An initial investigation found that he was involved in a fight with someone while attending a party late Saturday. He then went home and went to bed, police said.

No weapon was used during the altercation and several witnesses told police both Sanchez and the other person were intoxicated. Sanchez was reportedly kicked and punched several times by the other person, police said. A person of interest was in custody Monday, according to police.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy Monday and determined that Sanchez suffered multiple injuries and his death was ruled a homicide, according to police.

Evanston detectives and the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force continue to investigate.
