11-Year-Old Chicago Boy Drowns In Iowa

CLARINDA, Iowa (CBS) -- An 11-year-old boy has drowned in Iowa while swimming with a group of people near a dam along the Nodaway River.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said that Deontae Haynes was swimming with four other youths between the ages of 9 and 20 when he was swept toward the dam by the undertow.

Another youth -- Tamra Haley, 16, of Clarinda, Iowa -- tried to save Haynes but sucked in water while trying to do so and needed to be rescued by others at the scene. She was taken to a local hospital before she was transferred to a children's hospital in Nebraska hospital for treatment.

Haynes was recovered in 27 feet of water and he was taken to a hospital in Clarinda, where he was pronounced dead.

Rescue crews from several state and local agencies assisted in the attempts to rescue Haynes.
