Report: Same-Day Surgery Centers Pose Contamination Threat

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Same-day surgery centers may offer convenience, but they also may put patients at risk for contamination.

As WBBM Newsradio's Nancy Harty reports, Illinois state health inspectors cited 66 percent of same-day surgery centers for infection control problems in the past year, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

One of the offenders, Nomaved Eye Care in Chicago, failed to ensure the surgical instruments were sterilized for the required 10 minutes, the Sun-Times reported.

Midwest Center for Day Surgery in Downers Grove, which cleaned instruments in a sink without hot water, and a central Illinois center that failed to investigate why one of its surgeons had a high rate of post-op infections, the newspaper reported.

The hepatitis C outbreak three years ago at a clinic in Las Vegas has prompted tougher inspections, which have not yet been applied to 36 centers in Illinois, the Sun-Times reported.
