Smoking, Oxygen Therapy Leave Woman Critically Burned

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Smoking and oxygen therapy proved to be a dangerous combination early Thursday, when a woman was critically injured in a fire on the city's Near West Side.

Fire crews responded to 142 N. Leavitt St. at 3:19 a.m. and found the woman, 51, had been smoking while on oxygen therapy, according to Fire Media Affairs.

She suffered inhalation burns and first- and second-degree burns to her face, according to Fire Media Affairs. She was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

It was not indicated if there was any damage to the woman's home.

Police did not immediately have further information on the incident early Thursday.
