CHICAGO (CBS) — Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani makes it clear to WBBM, he’s ready to run for the White House, if he thinks he can win the Republican primary.

WBBM Newsradio’s John Cody reports, Giuliani said he needs to be assured that the Republican party could accept his relatively liberal social views.

He said he needs the “sense that I could win a Republican primary given the fact that I am considered to be a moderate Republican,” he said, while appearing at the WBBM Newsradio Newsmaker series on Tuesday.

“I consider myself pretty darned conservative.”

For example, he opposes abortion personally but accepts that a woman can make her own choice. He believes marriage is between a man and a woman but he supports the idea of same-sex civil unions, giving same-sex couples the same rights as anyone else.

Giulani says if Obama ran right now, he’d be defeated. But he says if the economy turns around before the 2012 election, Obama would again be a tough candidate to beat.
