City Council Committee Advises Crackdown On Sidewalk Auto Displays

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A City Council committee wants to penalize car dealers who display their vehicles on public sidewalks and parkways.

As CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports, the City Council Transportation Committee met on Tuesday and approved a measure doubling the maximum fine for damage to sidewalks, curbs or landscaping to $1,000, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The measure was proposed by Ald. Lona Lane (18th), and also emphasizes that the city can sue auto dealers to recover the costs of repairs, the Tribune reported.

The full City Council still must vote on the measure Thursday.

Meanwhile, Habermehl reminds us that sidewalks are for walking, not for parking – regardless of whether you're a private citizen or an auto dealer.
