Fire Breaks Out In ComEd Substation Near Sanitary And Ship Canal

CHICAGO (CBS) -- ComEd is assessing the damage after a substation caught fire Wednesday morning in an industrial district near the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

The Fire Department called a Level 1 Hazmat for the vault fire at 4151 W. 36th St., on the edge of the Little Village neighborhood, fire officials said. Crews responded at 7:08 a.m.

At the scene, flames were visible in the a power yard, and gray and black smoke were billowing up.

Investigators say a transformer exploded outside the one-story substation building.

The fire burned for hours, but had caused no outages, and no customers have been affected, utility spokeswoman Martha Swaney said. No workers were hurt in the fire, and the utility is continuing to asses the amount of damage done to the transformer, she said.

No injuries were reported.
