Bolland, Smith Out For Opener; Pirri Recalled

Updated Oct. 6, 2011 at 12:40 p.m.

(CBS) The Blackhawks recalled forward Brandon Pirri from Rockford Thursday and head coach Joel Quenneville said Dave Bolland and Ben Smith will not make the trip to Dallas for Friday night's season opener.

Bolland is battling an upper body injury, but head coach Joel Quenneville has said it is not another concussion or a back injury. Bolland could play in Saturday's home opener.

Meanwhile, Smith is recovering from a concussion and did not skate Thursday. He is day-to-day, according to Quenneville.

With both Bolland and Smith out, Quenneville said the Blackhawks are likely to dress seven defensemen Friday night.

Pirri opened the 2010 season with the Blackhawks, but spent most of the season with Rockford, scoring 12 goals and racking up 31 assists in 70 games with the AHL affiliate.

The Blackhawks start their much-anticipated 2011 campaign Friday night in Dallas. They'll then face the Stars again Saturday at the United Center.
