Cops Seek Van Linked To Rape, Abduction Attempt

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police are looking into similarities between the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl and the attempted abduction of a 14-year-old girl.

WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports that both crimes occurred in the same general area on the South Side earlier this month and both involved a black van.

The 14-year-old girl told police she was walking on the 8400 block of South Holland Road on Oct. 17 when a black van approached. The driver tried to convince her to get in, then demanded she get in. She ran away and he took off.

Police believe it might be the same black van used in the recent rape of a 15-year-old girl. She was grabbed at 81st and May streets on Oct. 18, forced into the van and raped at gunpoint.

"I seen it and I was wondering, like, why don't nobody saying anything about it. And then other people on the block is like, 'Oh, that vehicle was there since 1:30 that morning,'" a postal worker said at the vigil

At a vigil after that attack, neighbors told CBS 2 that they noticed the van parked for days near Calumet Perspectives Charter School.

Police were asking people to keep an eye out for the black, older model conversion van with tinted windows and a dent along the front passenger's side.

The suspect was described as a black man between 33 and 35, with a dark brown complexion.
