Naperville School Custodian Accused Of Exposure Has Felony Record

NAPERVILLE (CBS) -- A west suburban Naperville School District 203 custodian charged last week with exposing himself to a female staff member at Beebe Elementary School is a convicted felon.

In 1989, Kenneth R. Brown worked for an armored trucking company when stole more than $12,000 after picking up a cash deposit from a discount store in Naperville, according to records on file in DuPage County.

Brown, 54, was arrested on Dec. 22 following the incident at Beebe School, at 110 E. 11th Ave.

According to a complaint, Brown had exposed and then fondled himself in proximity to a female staff member. He also allegedly made some kind of physical contact with the woman.

No students were present, police said.

District 203 Supt. Mark A. Mitrovich on Thursday said Brown apparently began working for the district before 2004, when a new law that mandated felony background checks of public school employment applicants went into effect. Employees who had been hired before then did not undergo such scrutiny, he said.

"The issue, quite frankly, is that he was on staff when all of us got here," Mitrovich said.

Mitrovich added Brown on Thursday submitted his formal letter of resignation.

Brown pleaded guilty to the armored car theft charges and was placed on 21/2 years of probation, ordered to perform 50 hours of community service work and undergo substance abuse counseling.

Brown faces trial on a felony charge of aggravated battery of a school employee and a misdemeanor count of public indecency/lewd exposure. His arraignment is set for Jan. 23.
