At Least 18 Trapped In John Hancock Center Elevator

CHICAGO (STMW) - Authorities freed at least 18 people trapped in a John Hancock Center parking garage elevator early Saturday evening.

The Chicago Fire Department reported about 4:40 p.m. that an elevator at a parking garage for the John Hancock Center, 875 N. Michigan Ave., was stuck on the fifth floor and that 18 people were trapped inside.

Emergency personnel worked with the building engineer and Otis Elevator Company to determine the best way to unjam the elevator and release its occupants, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Fire Media announced about 5:05 p.m. that authorities' efforts were successful and the people in the elevator were all out and safe.

A woman was treated for shortness of breath and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.
