Field Museum To Offer Rare Look At Mummies

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Starting Friday, visitors can get a rare look at mummies from deep inside the Field Museum collection.

"Opening The Vaults: Mummies" will provide an up-close look at mummies, including one of the oldest mummies in the world.

High-tech CT imagery allows visitors to see what's under the wrappings, from the skeleton to curly hair on one female mummy, WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports. There's an XBox controller that takes you though a mummy's layers.

The exhibit, which runs from Feb.17-April 22, will also showcase some mummies that have not been in the public view for over 100 years.

The exhibit includes over 20 mummies and shows why mummification was not just for royal Egyptians.

Visitors will get to learn about Egyptian and South American mummification practices.
