Streamwood Teen Gives Birth At School

STREAMWOOD, Ill. (CBS) -- A 17-year-old Streamwood High School student delivered a baby in the girls' bathroom Tuesday morning, according to police.

Streamwood Deputy Police Chief Jim Gremo said, at around 9:15 a.m., the police officer who works in the school received a call on his radio to find the school nurse, and to call paramedics after a student was found delivering a baby in the bathroom.

As WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports, when the school's police officer arrived, the student was sitting on the toilet, holding her baby boy, Gremo said.

A staff member in the hallway had heard her screams coming from the bathroom, and alerted police, he said.

The student and her baby were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates and were doing well, Gremo said.

After police spoke with the student and the school nurse, it was decided no criminal investigation was necessary, he said.

John Heiderscheidt, coordinator of safety and security for School District U-46, would not comment on whether the student tried to conceal the pregnancy.

But, he said, "This happened very quickly. It was a surprise to us."
