Cowboys Sign QB Orton

(AP) A person with knowledge of the decisions says the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to deals with quarterback Kyle Orton and cornerback Brandon Carr.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced Wednesday's deals.

Orton, who finished last season in Kansas City after being released by Denver, has agreed to a three-year deal to be Tony Romo's backup.

Jon Kitna, Romo's primary backup the last two years, retired after last season.

Upgrading the secondary was a primary goal for the Cowboys in free agency. Carr agreed to a five-year deal after playing his first four NFL seasons with the Chiefs.

The move comes a day after two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman, a nine-year starter in Dallas, was released.
