Boys Knock Over 17 Headstones At Crystal Lake Cemetery

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (CBS) -- Two suburban teenagers are in hot water with the law, after police say boredom led them to ransack a Crystal Lake cemetery.

As WBBM Newsradio's John Waelti reports, around 5 p.m. March 25, a passerby noticed two boys knocking over tombstones at Mt. Thabor Cemetery, at 2700 Mt. Thabor Rd. in Crystal Lake.

Police were called, and soon got into a foot chase with the teenagers, who outran the officers and escaped.

But Crystal Lake Deputy police Chief Gene Lowery says the teens were eventually tracked down, and both confessed. Their motive, they admitted, was that they had nothing else to do that day, Lowery said.

"Quite literally, when they spoke to the detectives, they indicated that they were bored. They wanted to entertain themselves in some way, and they just started knocking over tombstones," Lowery said.

In all, the boys knocked over 17 tombstones.

The boys' names have not been released, as they are minors. One is from Crystal Lake, the other from Woodstock.

Lowery said the boys showed remorse, but they have still been charged with felonies in McHenry County Juvenile Court.
