Illinois To Focus On Housing Issues For Fair Housing Month
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Fair housing issues will come into focus in the coming weeks in Illinois as the state recognizes April as Fair Housing Month.
As WBBM Newsradio's Michele Fiore reports, 44 years after the federal Federal Fair Housing Act became law, the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Chicago Area Fair Housing Alliance are drawing attention to it.
The purpose of the law was essentially to end discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing related transactions based on race, religion, sex or familial status.
Several events are planned this month, including a fair housing expo in Springfield on April 19.
The initiative also marks the 33rd anniversary of the Illinois Human Rights Act.
