Marengo Couple's Horse Is A Top Contender In Kentucky Derby

MARENGO, Ill. (CBS) -- A far northwest suburban couple are the proud owners of one of the top horses set to race in the Kentucky Derby Saturday.

As WBBM Newsradio's Dave Berner reports, the Daily Herald says Chuck Sandford of Marengo in McHenry County needed a hobby – at least that's what his wife, Maribeth, told him.

So Sandford bought a horse. That horse is running in the Kentucky Derby – the most prestigious horserace in America – this weekend.

The Sandford also have a trainer and a world-champion jockey, and they are now in Louisville getting ready for the run for the roses, the Daily Herald reported.

The horse, Take Charge Indy, just came off an impressive win in March at the Florida derby. That makes Take Charge Indy one of the top 10 horses in the field in Louisville, the newspaper reported.

This is not the only time a local horse has done well. A man who owned a horse in Barrington named Street Sense won the Kentucky Derby in 2007.
