Boy, 13, Shot Dead Near Foster And Broadway

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 13-year-old boy from West Rogers Park is dead after being shot early Tuesday in the Uptown neighborhood, near Foster Avenue and Broadway.

The shooting happened about 2:20 a.m. at Laurie's Pizzeria and Liquors, which carries the address 5153 N. Broadway but actually fronts Foster Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

The boy was eating pizza with his sister and her male acquaintance, when another male fired shots into Laurie's from outside on the sidewalk, police said.

The boy -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Ivan Alanis of the 7400 block of North Western Avenue -- was initially taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Medical Center, police said.

He was pronounced dead there at 3:16 a.m. Tuesday, according to the medical examiner's office.

No one was in custody Tuesday morning. Area North detectives have launched a homicide investigation, and police said the shooting may have been gang-related.

A Chicago Transit Authority bus driver said buses were being rerouted from the scene as late as 4:30 a.m.
