Metra Train Fatally Strikes Pedestrian On North Side

Updated 5/29/12 at 9:16 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) - A Metra train struck and killed a pedestrian at the Ravenswood station Tuesday afternoon on the North Side.

Union Pacific North Train No. 335 struck a person on the Ravenswood station platform just before 4:30 p.m. at North Ravenswood and West Lawrence avenues, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

The Kenosha-bound train was not scheduled to stop at the station, she said.

The pedestrian was killed in the incident, but officials are not releasing his or her identity Tuesday night, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

Union Pacific trains were temporarily stopped in both directions but are on the move again Tuesday evening, according to Metra's website. At least 11 trains were affected by the incident, and some are delayed up to 2 1/2 hours.

The incident happened while CTA Brown, Purple and Red Line service was also suspended on the North Side because of a three-alarm fire near the Fullerton station.
