Maine Township Class of '42 Convenes For 70th Reunion

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (CBS) -- There was a gathering of old friends recently in the Chicago area, now nearly 90 years old – and they've been together, off and on, since they were kids.

As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, the friends are members of the class of 1942 from Maine Township High School – now Maine East – in Park Ridge. Most have died, and those remaining are scattered in places such as Arizona and Florida.

But over the weekend, the Chicago Tribune reports, they reunited to celebrate their 70th reunion over the weekend.

The Tribune reports about 30 members of the class showed up to reminisce, as the group has done nearly every five years since graduation.

There are high school sweethearts who are still together 70 years later – some of whom have known each other since grade school, the Tribune reports.

The group has held a reunion every five years, except in 1972, when, for reasons the Tribune does not explain, they skipped their 30th class reunion.

Betty Jo Streff Reed, 88, now of Denver, tells the Tribune it is "a lovely thing to have friends this long."
